As with most expansive-world titles, Borderlands 4 will feature an abundance of collectibles to seek out. The twist is that you’ll genuinely have to put in effort to obtain collectible bobblehead figures of the ever-frugal arms dealer, Marcus, as these will be concealed in hard-to-access locations.

As explained by Gearbox head Randy Pitchford, the concept for these collectibles stemmed from the studio’s desire to fully utilize the game’s improved movement capabilities. Borderlands 4 introduces multiple new traversal methods—including gliding, double-jumping, and using a grapple-hook to navigate areas–and Gearbox aimed to reward players with a keepsake for accessing remote areas on the map.

“Graeme Timmons–the creative director for Borderlands 4–collaborated with several of our designers, artists, and engineers to determine that we needed something for players to locate when they ventured into these isolated or sparsely populated regions,” Pitchford tweeted. “We desired something iconic. A similar item at each location, ensuring players would recognize they discovered it. The object had to be straightforward, easily identifiable, evoke a sense of being a collectible—and ideally—hold genuine ties to our universe.”

This led to the selection of the Marcus bobblehead, and there’s even an internal rationale for these existing on the secluded planet of Kairos. Pitchford mentioned that there are “well over 200” of these bobbleheads to gather, expecting that most players will never encounter any of them. “A very, very limited number of individuals will explore Kairos so thoroughly that they might uncover them all. Each possesses a narrative,” Pitchford further stated, while also challenging players with the inclusion of a map highlighting the locations of these collectibles.

In total, there are more than 200 Marcus Bobbleheads concealed around Kairos. I anticipate that most gamers will never spot even one. Some might discover a few. A very, very small fraction of players will explore Kairos such that they may find them all. Each has a narrative. 12/12 pic.twitter.com/OZBVD40CF2

As the September 12 launch date approaches, Gearbox is progressively increasing previews of Borderlands 4. A recent trailer showcased the new Siren Vex, highlighting her eerie abilities in action. The game also seems poised to roll out various enhancements to the looter-shooter’s mechanics, including a highly appreciated volume slider for Claptrap.
