Sea of Thieves Community Direct reveals all
- by Ben Kerry
Today, Sea Of Thieves creator Rare has conducted its inaugural ‘Community Direct’ livestream, discussing previous game updates and the studio’s aspirations for the future of the title. While particular future updates weren’t elaborated upon extensively, the team spoke about its development strategies from a broad perspective, following the recent discontinuation of Everwild.
In essence, the studio is focusing on several essential areas with upcoming SoT updates. One highlight is enhancing its processes for soliciting player feedback, addressing a wider array of concerns with greater speed. There was also a hint about features – with new Field of View settings appearing to be under consideration at Rare; a request that has not been addressed since the game’s debut in 2018.
Additionally, the team aims for its seasonal updates to be more unified, supported by a richer narrative. Rare notes that previously, it pursued certain new features or requests for each new season, often leading to the neglect of past elements that weren’t fully realized. It is now reorganizing its live service teams to enable developers to maintain focus on long-term features, rather than everyone shifting to what’s novel.
Nonetheless, there will continue to be a ‘Seasons’ team, with both Season 17 and 18 referenced in this community update. It appears that Season 17 will serve as a significant reset for Sea of Thieves, while Rare has started to hint at an expanded ‘Devil’s Roar’ area with Season 18. Beyond that, the Xbox developer states that it still has a multi-year roadmap for its pirate escapade, which is reassuring for fans who might have been concerned about the title after recent layoffs at the studio.
Rare concluded its Community Direct by revealing that paid custom servers will be introduced to the game in early 2026 – and we’ve included the full livestream below if you’re interested in more details about the future of Sea of Thieves. It seems that Rare’s grand pirate adventure isn’t going away just yet!
