He articulated numerous legendary characters
Pokémon enthusiasts and the voice acting fraternity are this week lamenting the demise of James Carter Cathcart, who has departed at the age of 71.
Cathcart was recognized not only for voicing characters such as Gary Oak but also Professor Oak and Team Rocket’s James and Meowth later in his journey. He also participated in other series like Yu-Gi-Oh! (Weevil Underwood) and Sonic the Hedgehog (Vector).
Voice actress Erica Schroeder verified his passing on social media, highlighting how he was “one of the most joyful, exuberant, kind-hearted, and skilled individuals” and a master of the “pen, piano, and microphone.”
“Rest in peace, beloved sweet man. You will be missed. The community will grieve you. The world will miss you. One of the most joyful, exuberant, kind-hearted and gifted souls no longer walks among us. James Carter Cathcart, you were truly unique, a gentle, lovely, playful genius, and I was fortunate to call you my friend.
Master of the pen, piano, and microphone. Friend to many. Loving father and husband. Thank you for your contributions.”
The Pokémon community has taken to social media to express its condolences, sharing messages like the following to celebrate Cathcart’s life and career:
Cathcart concluded his voice acting journey in 2023 after being diagnosed with throat cancer, yet still managed to lend his voice to the concluding episode of the original Pokémon series, which aired in the same year.
On behalf of the community here at Nintendo Life, we offer our heartfelt condolences to James’ family and friends.
