The Paper, the spin-off from Peacock of The Office, has secured a launch date, and it’s not too distant. Officially set to debut in September, The Paper serves as a more spiritual continuation of the cherished sitcom that aired from 2005 to 2013, following entirely new characters in a fresh environment, with the concept that this new “documentary” is filmed by the same fictional crew as The Office.

This time around, the narrative focuses on a struggling Midwestern newspaper as an energetic new editor strives to restore the paper to its former glory in an age increasingly indifferent to print media.

“Conceived by Greg Daniels (The Office) and Michael Koman (Nathan for You), The Paper transitions the setting from Scranton to Toledo as the same documentary team that accompanied the beloved Dunder Mifflin workers seeks a new subject to spotlight,” states Peacock’s formal synopsis for The Paper. “They stumble upon the historic yet struggling Midwestern newspaper, The Truth Teller, along with the ambitious publisher aiming to rejuvenate it.”

The Office itself was an adaptation of the original UK series sharing the same title, which aired for a considerably shorter three seasons (or series, according to the BBC’s terminology). The US adaptation of The Office continues to be one of the most adored American sitcoms ever and a constant streaming behemoth, as audiences repeatedly return to Dunder Mifflin and its cast of beleaguered yet hopeful paper salespeople.

The Paper features Domhnall Gleeson alongside Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key.

The Paper premieres on September 4 on Peacock. While we await, explore our selections for the 32 greatest sitcoms that aired post-‘90s.
