I believed the unveiling of The Outlast Trials‘ former major antagonist, a gun-toting, childish mobster named Francisco Barbie, was quite ruthless for the developers at Red Barrels, but Season 4’s introduction of conjoined twins collaborating to hunt and eliminate players is truly elevating the stakes.
Project Diarchy, the latest chapter of The Outlast Trials’ content, is set for release on July 15, introducing the new Prime Assets (significant foes) to the game, Otto and Arora Kress. The twins share a singular body, but are conjoined in a manner that has Arora seemingly perched on Otto’s shoulders, oriented in a different direction, thereby providing the killers with greater visibility while they stalk players in shadows, lockers, or barrels.
Otto brandishes a chainsaw, while Arora hurls toxic substances at players. Together, they possess a 360-degree field of sight, which will complicate stealth maneuvers. Red Barrels claims this duo represents “the most formidable Prime Asset [players] have encountered thus far.”
Typically, a new season brings a new map, and this instance is no exception. Players will be navigating a shopping mall, which will feature both the new Trial, or primary mission, Kill The Politician, alongside supplementary MK-Challenges, functioning as shorter missions in akin environments.
This new season will also introduce a fresh catalog, the game’s complimentary battle pass-like system of gruesome cosmetic rewards, in addition to more paid cosmetics, which will now be segmented into four individual packs for $5 each instead of the usual $20 pack for a collection of four. This will enable players to select the skins they prefer, eliminating the necessity to purchase the entire set just to acquire one or a few of the desired skins.
In addition to all that, the game’s endgame missions are reimagined in a novel format. Rebirth 2.0 infuses co-op possibilities into the gameplay, contrasting with the previous iteration that compelled players to tackle the game solo. Rebirth can now transpire on any of the major maps within the game, meaning it won’t be the same mission repeatedly, and it will be executed in mirror mode, borrowing a well-liked, albeit unforeseen, feature from Mario Kart.

“It’s a subject we frequently converse about while brainstorming new challenges,” narrative designer Jonathan Morrell shared with me. “Internally, it’s all about navigating that delicate balance. Someone proposes an idea, and even within the team, we might respond with, ‘I doubt we can go there.’ Or, ‘Maybe that’s a tad excessive, even for our standards.’ We tend to revisit it until we discover that balance. So far, at least, it appears we’ve managed to stay within limits, which is great, because I agree that there are few games out there as graphic or thematically unsettling as The Outlast Trials.”
Community manager Rosemarie Sarno mentioned that the group aims to “continuously strive to make it distinct enough that we recognize no other game would undertake this.”
The Outlast Trials Season 4 update will be available for free on July 15, although the sound of the chainsaw may take a toll on your sleep routine.
