Is it returning?!

Three years prior, Rockstar Games essentially terminated Red Dead Online; ceasing development on significant updates for the game to concentrate on creating GTA 6. However, this week (in typically unpredictable Rockstar style), the team has introduced “a fresh set of four spooky Telegram Missions” for the first time in years that evoke strong Undead Nightmare vibes from the original Red Dead Redemption.
Indeed, these Telegram Missions challenge RDO players to “track down undead infestations, rogue machines, swamp creatures, and beyond”. The new Red Dead Online missions launched today, July 1st, marking Rockstar’s first substantial update for the game since 2022 – and they’re reportedly ‘Volume 1‘, with additional content anticipated in the future.
As this latest update is now available, we’re beginning to see more gameplay footage emerge online as well – and anyone who experienced RDR’s Undead Nightmare expansion may find themselves having significant flashbacks. There even seems to be a zombie ‘horde mode’ objective included within these missions, where players must eliminate infected foes and return them to a designated wagon.
For the time being, this is merely a seemingly casual update to Red Dead Online (with more on the way), but it raises inquiries about whether something larger is forthcoming for Red Dead Redemption 2. We’ve yet to receive a proper Xbox Series X|S update for the game, and what better method to do so than by aligning it with a revival of Undead Nightmare? Nothing is assured on that for now, but it may be prudent to stay alert in the upcoming months as we await the release of GTA 6 in May 2026.
