Its Metacritic user rating falls to 7.5
Following Nintendo’s latest update for Mario Kart World, a small faction of fans appears to be airing their grievances in the only manner they know: by reviewing the game unfavorably on Metacritic.
As reported by The Gamer, the user review average for Mario Kart World has fallen from approximately 8.3 to 7.5 in merely a few days (it’s also important to mention that The Gamer had it at 7.7 just a couple of days prior, indicating that the score is still in decline).
Nintendo’s recent update has made it significantly more difficult for online players to randomly pick standard 3-lap courses, focusing instead on the so-called ‘intermission’ races that utilize the game’s new open world. 3-lap courses remain accessible, but the likelihood of their appearance has decreased considerably.
A number of fans still appreciate the classic 3-lap races, so we can somewhat understand the discontent, yet we are uncertain if rating the game with a score of… let me check… yes, 0/10 is the appropriate response. Hey, if this compels Nintendo to take notice, then fair enough – perhaps that is the intention.
We have no doubt that Mario Kart World will receive updates well into the future, and we believe Nintendo will eventually offer sufficient choices to satisfy all fans. For the moment, however, its decisions are undeniably prompting some to express their frustration online. One video even claimed that Nintendo has “terminated” the game with the latest update. Ouch.
Despite the uproar, we still consider Mario Kart World to be quite an excellent game. We rated it 9/10, stating it “refines and broadens the formula in significant ways while enhancing the charm in many other aspects”.
