The creators behind the stunning love letter and turn-based sensation Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have been open about their influences. Everything from classic Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger to Lost Odyssey and Atlus JRPGs have contributed to the formation of the team’s inaugural title, but the director of Expedition 33 recently gave particularly high praise to one in specific.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s creative director, Guillaume Broche, praised Persona 5, the coming-of-age saga about attending school during the day and battling demons by night, in an interview with DenfaminicoGamer.

“I believe Persona 5 is the finest game in the world concerning combat representations and UI design,” Broche remarked, with quotes translated by Genki. “I was profoundly influenced by the dynamic camera shifts each time the player takes action, and how it unfolds like viewing a film.”

Persona’s chic camera movements were evidently incorporated into the latest J-inspired RPG, and you can even trace it back to Lost Odyssey. However, Broche also mentioned his desire to expand on this feature in future installments. Regardless, Broche isn’t the only one offering compliments. Persona 5 ranks among the very finest JRPGs ever crafted, according to our standards, at the least.

Expedition 33 is also proving to be a heavyweight in its own right. The title registered an impressive one million copies sold within just a few days, not accounting for those who sampled it through Game Pass on Xbox and PC. Additionally, its peak concurrent player count on Steam exceeded that of substantial titles in the genre, such as Metaphor: ReFantazio, and continued to rise weeks after its debut.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Collector’s Edition “sold out much quicker” than anticipated, prompting all its neat merchandise to be re-released without the base RPG for $119
