Josh Holloway mentions that he was intended to meet a horrific death in the initial script for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

“In the first draft, Paula Patton comes across me as I’m on the verge of dying, but I’m not completely gone yet. Then I begin to murmur the codes to her before I pass away,” Holloway disclosed (via The Hollywood Reporter). “So she has to slice me open, insert her hand into my chest, restart my heart, and bring me back to life. After that, I share the codes with her, and she allows me to perish once more.”

Holloway’s character Trevor Hanaway meets his end in the initial moments of the film at the hands of assassin Sabine Moreau (Lea Seydoux), who pilfers Russian nuclear launch codes intended for a man named Cobalt (Michael Nyqvist). He is discovered by his supervisor, Jane (Patton), in a heart-wrenching scene.

Holloway added: “We shot it. We accomplished that scene, and after they viewed it, they remarked, ‘It’s just too brutal,’ and, ‘The audience is going to resent Paula because she revives you for information, and then allows you to die again, and you’re supposed to be in love.’

This revelation coincides with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which may be Tom Cruise’s final performance as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt. Holloway can be seen next in Duster, a crime drama set in the 1970s created by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan.
