PS5 Exclusives Push Square

Throughout nearly the entirety of the PS5 era, PlayStation enthusiasts have anticipated that Sony would organize some type of digital gathering in May. The company has conducted either a PlayStation Showcase or a State of Play around this period annually since 2019, but it appears increasingly probable that Sony will be deviating from this pattern in 2025.

Per NateDrake, a remarkably trustworthy leaker on the ResetEra forum, they “haven’t received any word regarding a May event from Sony for this year”. Naturally, there is a possibility that a livestream is occurring and NateDrake’s contacts simply lack insight into those arrangements.

This is an individual who accurately revealed when the Nintendo Switch 2 would make its online debut and has shown precision in various instances previously, particularly in documenting which PS5 ports Microsoft has in the works. They have already been validated with the PS5 versions of Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War. There’s no basis for skepticism.

The absence of a livestream from Sony during the conventional summer gaming announcement season would be quite disappointing, yet it wouldn’t take many by surprise. Death Stranding 2 is merely a month away, Marathon is turning out to be disastrous for dedicated fans, and Ghost of Yotei has its release strategy already outlined.

In reality, that last point is likely one of the key reasons contributing to skepticism about an event. A launch date for Ghost of Yotei could have comfortably concluded a State of Play livestream. Instead, Sony opted to randomly announce it on a Wednesday afternoon last month.

It still has titles like Marvel’s Wolverine and Saros confirmed, yet if they’re not prepared to be showcased again, Sony could be lacking sufficient material to rationalize hosting a livestream. Historically, a PlayStation Showcase has emphasized first-party content while State of Play events have concentrated on third-party offerings, with occasional reveals from PlayStation Studios.

The absence of an internal Sony showcase does not eliminate the possibility of new PS5 exclusives being revealed next month. As evidenced during last year’s Summer Game Fest livestream, Sony is open to providing Geoff Keighley a few reveals, given he announced LEGO Horizon Adventures on his stage.

How would you react if Sony chose not to host any form of livestream in the upcoming weeks? Share your opinions in the comments below.
