Avowed game supervisor Carrie Patel has declared that she has departed from developer Obsidian to take on the role of game director at Night Dive, known for Oxenfree and owned by Netflix.

Avowed debuted in February for Xbox and PC, receiving critical acclaim. Microsoft, which possesses Obsidian, has yet to share any figures regarding the game’s financial performance, however.

Post-launch, Patel expressed her desire for Obsidian to invest additional time in the Avowed universe, with many interpreting this as a hint toward a sequel. “Having created this remarkable world, and forged team strength and familiarity with the content and gameplay in this environment, I would love to see us expand on it,” she remarked.

Avowed was initially presented as a multiplayer-focused experience merging Destiny with Skyrim. This was prior to Patel joining as the game’s director, guiding the project through a significant developmental shift.

Patel spent over 11 years at Obsidian, contributing to titles such as Pillars of Eternity 1+2 and The Outer Worlds before stepping into the role of game director for Avowed. Obsidian is currently developing The Outer Worlds 2, anticipated for release later this year.

Patel departing Obsidian doesn’t inherently indicate anything about the future of Avowed or any other project for that matter. Individuals leave their positions for numerous reasons.

While there is no update regarding a potential sequel to Avowed, Obsidian is enhancing the game with substantial updates this summer and fall that will introduce new NPC abilities and behaviors, among other features like new game plus and photo modes.

Patel joins Netflix amid significant transitions and disruption regarding gaming at the company. Netflix has already closed its AAA game studio and has been focusing its gaming output more on mobile and social games lately. Nonetheless, Netflix’s top gaming executive states that fans should recognize that it requires “time, persistence, and investment to achieve exceptional outcomes.”

The specific project for which Patel is now the game director at Netflix remains unclear. Continue to visit GameSpot for the latest updates.
