“There is going to be an authentic Xbox handheld created by Microsoft.”
Alright, this Xbox handheld situation is becoming a little perplexing, but bear with us! Recently, we’ve discussed the 2025 Xbox handheld (which is being developed by ASUS), and it’s anticipated to essentially function as an ASUS ROG Ally with some unique Xbox features. Nevertheless, Microsoft seems to be planning something even more significant for 2027.
We’ve discussed this before, and Windows Central reiterated yesterday that according to sources, a first-party handheld is indeed in development for 2027 and will include a docking mechanism reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch.
“From what I gather, a genuine Xbox handheld will be developed by Microsoft, featuring a docking station similar to the Nintendo Switch.”
Moreover, the publication suggests that the next Xbox console (a successor to the Series X) may also debut in 2027, “potentially allowing side-loading of PC storefronts like Steam and Epic Games”—as previously rumored.
This latest update was intended to debunk the notion that the upcoming Xbox console and 2027 handheld would be powered by Qualcomm chips, as hinted by a Microsoft job posting. Windows Central stated that these devices aim for “maximum compatibility with your existing library” and that the performance requirements are “beyond the current capabilities of the Snapdragon lineup.”
As always, remember that plans at Microsoft can shift rapidly, and a 2027 launch is by no means guaranteed (even WC notes it may just be the reveal period rather than the release date). We’ll certainly gather more insights as the months and years proceed, but in the meantime, we’re eagerly awaiting ASUS to disclose this year’s Xbox handheld!
