“I truly appreciated exploring the city for procedural offenses”

There has been considerable buzz surrounding today’s release of the new Xbox game, The Precinct. Reviews have emerged in sync with its launch on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and several other platforms over the last few hours.

At Pure Xbox, we shared our “Hands On” / ongoing review of The Precinct, describing it as an “enthralling mix of Police Sim and GTA”, while noting some minor issues including the shooting mechanics and frame rate reductions.

But how do other reviewers feel? Here’s a summary of their opinions on The Precinct so far:

Push Square (8/10)

“The Precinct is a remarkable sandbox adventure. Powered by a lively crime system that provides hours of enjoyment with quick objectives, it’s extremely hard to set aside. Every patrol offers a unique experience, and while monotony may creep in as the campaign nears its end, the intricate and polished design of this homage to classic cop films remains commendable.”

KeenGamer (7.5/10)

“Though not flawless in delivery, The Precinct’s daring approach to various elements of police work deserves recognition. Averno City provides an enjoyable sandbox for chaotic fun, teeming with amusing criminal antics.”

IGN (7/10)

“The Precinct’s emphasis on correct arrest procedures and penalizing unnecessary force demands a level of patience that not everyone possesses (and this system may lose its appeal over time). However, I found pleasure in navigating the city for procedural offenses during the story – and the damp, neon-infused ‘80s atmosphere adds considerable charm.”

Checkpoint Gaming (6.5/10)

“The Precinct serves as a delightful tribute to ‘80s cop narratives, merging neighborhood patrols with high-speed pursuits in an expansive world. Despite its ability to capture the right tone through stylish sequences, thrilling car chases, and a synth-heavy soundtrack, its cumbersome mechanics and superficial upgrades hamper its more immersive gameplay.”

DualShockers (6/10)

“Throughout my gaming experience with The Precinct, the aspects that annoyed me were seldom the core game itself but rather the additional layers placed on top. It had the potential to be a charming, understated game about monitoring parking meters and the occasional shootout, but the inclination to introduce more extravagant features dilutes the strengths where The Precinct genuinely excels.”

PCGamesN (4/10)

“Struggling to determine whether it aims to depict the action movie persona of a cop or the often sobering, uncomfortable realities of the role, the game falls flat in simulating either effectively.”

As evident, a number of critiques regarding The Precinct exist, impacting its Metacritic average, which stands at 65 as of this moment. It’s a bit disheartening, although the OpenCritic score is slightly better at 70.

Is The Precinct Available on Xbox Game Pass?

Regrettably, The Precinct is not part of Xbox Game Pass at its launch. Instead, you can purchase it on the Xbox Store for £24.99 / $29.99 for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
