Looks Like ‘Bravely Default’ On Switch 2 Will Still Have 0% Encounter Toggle
Updated []:
No need to worry, the Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster will indeed allow players to adjust the encounter rate right down to 0%.
Previously, based on the game’s screen shots shared in the original report, it was believed that this feature had been eliminated. However, representatives from Square Enix have assured Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier at PAX East that it’s possible to configure encounters to 0%.
A response to Jason’s post mentions that this is a capability you can achieve at a particular juncture in the game, rather than being a menu option like the 50%, 100% (normalized rate), and 200% rates are. Could it be a new gadget or something of that sort? We’ll just have to hold tight and see.
Other media outlets have also reportedly received this confirmation from Square Enix reps at PAX East, with RPGFan stating that they were informed that this will not be accessible from the very inception of the game.
Definitely good news all around!
Initial Story: An HD Remaster of Square Enix’s Bravely Default: Flying Fairy will be launched on the Switch 2 console’s release day, which brings us great joy to witness the first installment in this charming series transition to home consoles. However, its launch as a Game-Key Card game has undeniably created a small blemish on what should be a jubilant occasion.
Additionally, a potential issue might be brewing, as a Square Enix blog post highlights several renewed and returning functionalities from the 3DS version of the game.
What seems to be unsettling players is the “Encounter Rate Settings” segment, where the blog states (accompanied by a screenshot, below) that “Players have the option to adjust the rate of random opponent encounters in 50% intervals anywhere between 50% and 200%.”
Nevertheless, in the Western launch of Bravely Default, you could cut down the encounter rate to 0%, meaning players could disable random encounters altogether. This phenomenal feature that enabled players to personalize their experience seems to be conspicuously missing here.
Of course, there are a couple of disclaimers here – this remaster might very well be centered on the original Japanese release of the game titled Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. The 3DS version released in the West is actually derived from an upgraded re-release of the game called Bravely Default: For the Sequel, which introduced a multitude of quality-of-life enhancements.
The original Japanese release didn’t offer an option to alter the encounter rate at all. This feature was introduced in “For the Sequel” and continued to be available in the sequel, “Bravely Second: End Layer”. You can’t disable encounters for Bravely Default 2, but adversaries are visible on the overworld, thereby eliminating random encounters.
The removal of this seems peculiar considering its widespread acceptance. Additional features such as fast-forward remain intact. Besides, Square Enix plans on introducing new content in the form of two fresh mini-games. Therefore, it’s clear this isn’t merely a rudimentary port with enhanced visuals.
We’ve sought confirmation on this information from Square Enix, and we’ll update you if there are any developments.
