For several years now, the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 has been eagerly awaited. The Nintendo Direct only hyped up the anticipation. Still, many users voiced concerns about the console’s perceived lack of novelty, barring the system’s pricing issue, a topic that Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo’s president, addressed recently.

Each Nintendo console, starting from the DS, has been defined by a central gimmick or innovation, with devices like the Wiimote, the Wii U GamePad, or simply the original concept of the Switch. Yet, the Switch 2 stands as the first instance since the GameCube where Nintendo has focused mainly on creating a console, and it stands to be an enhanced version.

Furukawa was asked about the Switch 2’s lack of a significant overhaul, much like its predecessors, during a Q&A session with investors post Nintendo’s latest financial report. He defended that the prime objective to upgrade from the Switch lied in improving the gaming experience.

Furukawa stated, “Over these eight years and more, it has become essential to enhance the hardware processing performance to allow game developers to bring forth unique gameplay experiences. As such, we opted to design a hardware with advanced processing capability.” He believes that Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza will offer novel gaming experiences unachievable on the original Nintendo Switch. He presumably might be hinting at Mario Kart World’s open world and Bananza’s terrain deformation.

Nintendo’s president sealed his statement by saying, “Moving on, we will create a variety of new titles revolving around Nintendo Switch 2 and offer unprecedented gameplay experiences. Our aim is to establish Nintendo Switch 2 as the new norm for Nintendo Switch, as a hardware that constantly presents fresh surprises to our users.”
