Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Sales Japan

As one of the early favorites for 2025’s Game of the Year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been a remarkable triumph for its creators, Sandfall Interactive. However, it appears that the game has not gained popularity in Japan yet.

Recent sales reports in the country imply the game sold only 9,800 units on PS5 since its launch on 24th April. It should be highlighted that these numbers do not include digital purchases, but they can give us an idea of the game’s general acceptance.

It’s unclear if this outcome was anticipated. Hardly any Western games, except evergreen ones like Minecraft, make a mark in Japan, yet it looked plausible that Clair Obscur, with its deep roots in Japanese RPGs, could have performed better.

However, we suspect the game, originating from France, didn’t have much promotional activity in Japan. We’re also confident that the developers Sandfall Interactive and their publisher Kepler Interactive didn’t expect explosive sales figures in this region.

On a positive note, Clair Obscur recently reached the impressive milestone of 2 million global sales, a fact that was widely applauded. It’s unfortunate, though, that the game’s appeal hasn’t translated to the Japanese market.

Did you foresee a higher performance in Japanese sales for this game? Check out our elaborate Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 guide if you require game assistance, and feel free to speculate on what could have been in the comments section below.
