Fans of Kingdom Hearts (myself included) are currently facing the most prolonged period of news scarcity in the series’ past, as we haven’t received any updates regarding Kingdom Hearts 4 in over 1,000 days. Therefore, allow me to introduce Duskfade, a retro-styled 3D action platformer heavily inspired by Kingdom Hearts and other nostalgic PS2 gems.
Duskfade initially drew my attention with a social media post from developer Weird Beluga, who shared a short video featuring their indie title along with “three of our inspirations behind it.” These inspirations were Jak and Daxter, the original Ratchet and Clank, and of course, Kingdom Hearts.

Identifying elements from those classic titles in Duskfade isn’t particularly challenging. For example, the main character wields an almost Keyblade-like oversized weapon with a chunky handle. He also battles (sort-of Heartless) shadowy foes that aim to shroud the world in darkness. Now, where have I heard that before?
However, Duskfade offers more than just a tribute to those legendary games. It seems to prioritize the platforming aspect of its ‘action platformer’ label, as both Kingdom Hearts and Ratchet and Clank have gradually shifted their focus away from demanding traversal challenges over time. Besides, I’m always delighted to see a grappling hook included in any game.
“Break free from the constraints of time as you leap, swing, and strike through a mesmerizing world in this homage to classic 3D action platformers,” the game’s Steam description asserts. “Zirian, along with his mechanical companion Cuckoo, must rescue his sister from a mysterious Clock Tower that has enveloped the land in perpetual night.”
Duskfade is set to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S sometime in 2026.
