There’s nothing quite as disheartening as losing a permadeath save in an expansive exploration game like No Man’s Sky, and it appears that Hello Games’ founder Sean Murray also empathizes.

A recent Reddit post by user “Spirited_Ad3028” reveals such a poignant situation. “RIP my permadeath file beautifully,” shares the No Man’s Sky player, explaining why they cannot retrieve any of their progress. “I touched down on the wrong planet in my permadeath save. I’m on a small rock, encircled by vast oceans in every direction. I’m out of launch fuel, and I lack ferrite.”

The user elaborates on their heartbreaking predicament. “I can only last a few moments outside the ship before the toxic atmosphere takes my life – and toxic storms arrive every few minutes, unleashing huge waves. I’ve been performing desperate laps in all directions, diving in and shooting aimlessly for ferrite dust. All I can do is remain in my ship, observe the lightning storms, and wait for my oxygen to deplete.”

It’s almost poetic, reminiscent of something taken straight from a sci-fi narrative. Adrift in space with a malfunctioning ship on a deadly planet, devoid of options and purpose. Those of us who resonate with Spirited_Ad3028’s saga are not alone in feeling this way. Hello Games’ Sean Murray even shared a clip of the user’s unfortunate experience on his social media, complete with a salute emoji.

One observer noted the player’s exit: “That’s how permadeath runs should conclude, with a grand finale.” Another referred to it as “a beautiful demise.” As a seasoned No Man’s Sky player myself, I’d be dishonest if I claimed I wouldn’t be crushed to lose everything (not that I possess the courage to undertake permadeath saves, to begin with), but one thing is certain – it’s definitely one of the more serene ways to perish in-game.
