Nintendo has announced that Donkey Kong Country Returns HD has exceeded 1 million in sales, totaling 1.27 million.

Launched on 16th January 2025, the success of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD aligns with our expectations, but it still stands as a remarkable feat in just a month and a half. However, it was outpaced by titles such as Super Mario Odyssey (1.33 million), Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD (1.88 million), and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2.02 million).

DKCR HD faced some criticism leading up to its launch, particularly regarding the widespread dissatisfaction over its perceived lack of substantial enhancements to justify the $60 price. Additionally, the original creators at Retro Studios were omitted from the game’s credits, which sparked considerable outrage among fans, including ourselves.

Our focus now shifts to the imminent debut of Donkey Kong Bananza on the Switch 2. While DKCR HD was an enjoyable diversion, let’s be frank, this upcoming title is the main attraction. Set to release on 17th July 2025 and reportedly (though not verified) crafted by the team behind the 3D Mario franchise, it marks DK’s return to the 3D dimension in a game where you’ll break apart the landscape to uncover hidden bananas and treasures.

Moreover, Nintendo anticipates a total of 15 million Switch 2 sales in the upcoming fiscal year, alongside 45 million software units sold. As for the original Switch, Nintendo aims to achieve 4.5 million sales, allowing it to surpass the Nintendo DS in overall sales figures.

Did you acquire Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on the Switch? Are you taken aback by the sales figures, or did you find them predictable? Feel free to leave a comment below and share your perspectives.
