That’s the impact of Game Pass for you
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 attracted a large audience on Xbox Game Pass when it debuted last week, even despite the surprise release of Oblivion Remastered just days before—establishing Xbox as the leading platform for the game.
As noted by The Game Business, fresh Ampere statistics have disclosed that 45% of Expedition 33 players were on Xbox at launch, followed by 30% on PS5 and 25% on Steam. A similar trend was observed with Oblivion Remastered, capturing an impressive 47% of users on Xbox, 30% on Steam, and 19% on PS5.
“Xbox was the top platform for both titles due to that Game Pass connection. 45% of Expedition 33 participants were on Xbox, while 47% of Oblivion gamers were on Microsoft’s platform.”
As indicated, Xbox Game Pass is the primary reason Xbox has emerged as the leading platform here, but it also accounts for its lower average playtime. Players of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on Xbox have logged merely 2.2 hours on average, whereas that figure doubles to 4.4 hours on both PS5 and Steam. Oblivion exhibits a very similar pattern.
This outcome isn’t too surprising, as many inquisitive Xbox Game Pass subscribers likely experimented with Expedition 33 and moved on for various reasons, while those purchasing it on PS5 and Steam are more aligned with the game’s target audience and are clearly seeking to maximize their investment.
Fortunately, it appears that Oblivion Remastered didn’t significantly impact Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as stated by the game’s publisher, with Kepler Interactive’s senior portfolio director remarking that the launch “went as well as it possibly could from our perspective” and that “the closeness to Oblivion didn’t seem to harm us at all.” Phew!
