Update #2 []:

We did caution you to take this with skepticism, but it appears that Yuji Horii may not have actually addressed anything regarding a possible Chrono Trigger remake after all.

Gematsu (highlighted by our sister site Push Square) has examined all of the footage and seems to have verified that no, Yuji Horii did not reference a Chrono Trigger remake himself; instead, it was only mentioned by the translator. Whoops.

As the iconic Game Over screen in Chrono Trigger states — “But… the future refused to change.” Yet, we remain optimistic. How about you?

Update #1 []:

Another participant has joined the Chrono Trigger remake discussion, offering footage from the panel that showcases the moment from Yuji Horii where the game appeared to be confirmed.

While the video is entirely in Italian and Japanese, user Kaguya-Shinomiya_ has shared an English translation of the dialogue, indicating “It’s talked about a remake for it,” likely referring to Chrono Trigger.

The footage is included below, along with our initial report:

Original Story: A remake of a cherished RPG, which is marking its 30th anniversary this year, is apparently on the horizon — at least according to Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii.

Indeed, the long-anticipated remake might be in the works — Chrono Trigger is reportedly being revised, and Horii-san (who supervised the 1995 classic) may have unintentionally revealed this during a panel at Napoli Comicon. Numerous fans who attended Horii’s panel have confirmed that the renowned game designer seemingly validated the remake’s existence (via Insider Gaming).

The first mention surfaced on the ChronoTrigger subreddit, where user df_tarocco_1 remarked, in a thread titled “Yuji Horii Confirms Chrono Trigger Remake at Comicon in Naples,” that “The father of Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger let this information slip during an interview,” and that “the audience erupted.”

On the DragonQuest subreddit, another user — TheFishyOne — corroborated that they were also present and confirmed that Horii accidentally disclosed this detail: “He commented along the lines of what [user LafulnessSure125] stated, and the interviewer said ‘Wait, if that’s accurate, this is significant.’ The translator sought confirmation from Horii, who seemingly realized he shouldn’t have revealed that and the translator added: ‘You have heard nothing.'”

Over on ResetEra, user Dash Kappei reported that a couple of friends were at the panel and “messaged about the Chrono remake” when Horii made the mention.

Finally, on X, streamer CammyZura replied to a comment asking for verification of the ChronoTrigger subreddit post, and although she doesn’t have a recording of the instance, she stated that Horii-san is “pleased to know that CT is still admired and [Square Enix?’] revisiting it.”

We remain uncertain about what form this remake will take, as Horii was quickly advised not to elaborate further and apparently instructed the audience to “pretend [they] heard nothing.” Nevertheless, the notion of a remake is certainly thrilling news for RPG enthusiasts.

Of course, we must advise here, until official word comes from Square Enix, take all of this with a hefty amount of skepticism. However, given that Horii himself — who contributed to the SNES RPG and has an exclusive production agreement with Square Enix through his company, Armor Project — has indicated it, there’s a valid chance this is true.

Chrono Trigger is widely considered one of the greatest RPGs ever created. Developed by the Dream Team consisting of Hironobu Sakaguchi (the creator of Final Fantasy), Horii, and the late manga artist Akira Toriyama, alongside a plethora of RPG legends, fans have been yearning for the game to be available on Switch, or any platform that’s not a tablet or PC, for some time.

Please, stay composed, everyone! It might not mean anything… perhaps. What a remarkable way to potentially commemorate the game’s 30th anniversary though, wouldn’t you say? It could be one of those “various projects” Square hinted at a few weeks ago. It would fit perfectly on Switch 2…
