PlatinumGames

One of the primary figures at PlatinumGames has announced his departure from the organization — and has now established his own studio.

Takahisa Taura served as a designer on the acclaimed action RPG NieR: Automata, and after that project gained immense popularity, he took on the role of director for the Nintendo Switch exclusive Astral Chain.

It’s justifiable to regard Taura as a seasoned expert in his specialty. Prior to Automata, he contributed to titles such as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and more recently, he led a team at PlatinumGames that assisted with the development of Final Fantasy 16.

Details about his new venture, Eel Game Studio, are not yet fully disclosed, but it’s reasonable to assume Taura’s expertise in action games will be utilized. More information about the studio is likely to emerge in the upcoming weeks as job postings and other announcements appear online.

Similar transitions by veteran Japanese developers have been highlighted this year, alongside broader reports indicating that Japan’s gaming sector is currently thriving — particularly in contrast to their western peers.

Robert Ramsey

Robert (or Rob if you’re informal) serves as an assistant editor for Push Square and has been a PlayStation enthusiast since the 90s when Tekken 2 introduced him to the exhilarating realm of video games. He still plays his fighting games with intensity, but RPGs are his true love. The Witcher, Persona, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Trails, Tales — he’s experienced them all. Perhaps a bit too much, some might argue.
