One of the most exasperating features of the Nintendo Switch was when external developers would announce a game release date but follow it up with something like “and arriving soon on Switch!”… Sure, that’s quite vague, thanks.
While we can’t confirm if this is happening again, Gearbox Software’s Randy Pitchford has shared a video stating that the release date of Borderlands 4 has been moved forward, and the game is now set to launch on 12th September 2025. What’s unclear, however, is whether this change also pertains to the Switch 2 version.
If you recall, the recent Nintendo Direct announcement for Switch 2 did not provide a launch date, which initially was set for 23rd September on other platforms. Instead, Pitchford indicated that the game will “arrive in 2025”.
So if Pitchford’s statement indeed applies to the Switch 2 version, then fantastic, we are excited! If not, and the game’s Nintendo release remains somewhat uncertain, we would appreciate more clarification regarding the situation (and we’ve reached out directly to gather more information).
As for why the release date has changed, Pitchford mentioned that development is advancing so well that Gearbox decided to expedite it. We all know the reality, though… Publisher 2K not only manages Borderlands 4 but also a little title known as Grand Theft Auto 6, which is slated for 2025. We’re not conspiracy theorists, but we can’t envision 2K wanting Borderlands 4 to release close to the next major GTA.
