Further supporting the third-party approach

I’ve been discussing on Pure Xbox today about Xbox’s third-party approach and how releasing games on other platforms is finally becoming clear to me, and these recent projections from Alinea Analytics seem to reinforce that idea.

Essentially, the analytics company indicates that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is outperforming its sales on PS5 compared to Xbox and Steam, with 117.2k copies sold on PS5 and 91.2k copies on Steam within the first six days.

Here’s a chart that the firm created to illustrate these sales numbers:

“Six days post-launch, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle had reached 117.2K copies sold on PS5 (as of April 23, 2025) and 91.2K on Steam (as of Dec 14, 2024). It’s moving 28% quicker despite the initial marketing phase being concluded.”

Regarding Xbox figures, Alinea Analytics simply notes that “Indiana Jones is gaining traction on PlayStation faster than Steam and Xbox” without offering specific numbers, but suggests a significant factor could be that just under 5 million users have engaged with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on Xbox Game Pass, indicating an “overwhelming majority” of Xbox users compared to those who purchased the game outright.

It’s important to mention that this analytics firm works with estimates rather than official figures, yet they assert that their “copies sold” calculations are the “most reliable in the industry”. They also argue that launching titles like Indiana Jones on PS5 simultaneously with Xbox makes the most financial sense moving forward.

“It’s logical to assume that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would have sold even more rapidly on PlayStation had it been released alongside other platforms when marketing was at its peak.”

Xbox is undoubtedly paying close attention to this data. We anticipate that they aim to – and will eventually – release all first-party games on PlayStation on day one. They have been gradually approaching this in order to avoid upsetting their vocal core audience during this transition.”

There’s a lot more available on the official Alinea Analytics website if you’re curious, including insights on how Xbox Game Pass is “naturally affecting premium sales” and why distributing first-party games to other platforms has turned into a necessity from the firm’s perspective.

We hope to continue receiving sales estimates like these for Indiana Jones and particularly Forza Horizon 5 as weeks and months progress, as we are eager to see how Xbox’s third-party strategy develops throughout 2025.
