Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive has revealed that the game has already sold 500,000 units shortly after its release. In a post on social media, the studio noted that they achieved this sales landmark “earlier than we ever expected.”

Expedition 33 is also available on Game Pass, and it’s likely that the 500,000 figure does not account for players engaging through the subscription service. Currently, Expedition 33 ranks as the second highest-selling game on Steam, trailing only behind Oblivion Remastered, having surpassed over 70,000 concurrent users. The game is accessible on the PS5 as well.

Some industry analysts speculated that Oblivion Remastered might have overshadowed Expedition 33 since it launched unexpectedly just two days before Expedition 33. Both titles are included in Game Pass, yet it’s clear that there is ample space for multiple successes this week. Both Bethesda and Sandfall exchanged congratulatory notes related to their respective game launches this week.

Expedition 33 was crafted by a dedicated team of about 30 individuals at Sandfall. “I genuinely think that five or six years ago, a team of our scale wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this,” stated creative director Guillaume Broche, speaking to PC Gamer about the studio’s application of Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.

GameSpot’s Expedition 33 critique awarded the game a 9/10, with reviewer Richard Wakeling stating, “There are minor drawbacks concerning its limited exploration and a few user-friendly issues, but these missteps do not considerably lessen the experience of a game that has all the elements of an RPG classic.”
