Here at Pure Xbox, we’ve consistently praised the excellence of Xbox backwards compatibility – the ability to enjoy all those original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on contemporary devices, frequently with remarkable performance enhancements, is truly remarkable. This month, Team Xbox is enhancing the service once again with the introduction of remote play capabilities.
In a feature-rich monthly update for April 2025, Microsoft is incorporating the capability to stream “backward compatible games from the original Xbox and Xbox 360” via remote play. Remote play allows you to interact with your console from another device and play your Xbox library on an alternate screen – and it functions quite effectively.
Until now, remote play for Xbox backward compatible titles has been unavailable, making this addition in 2025 especially welcome. The only drawback is that Microsoft has officially ceased remote play support through the Xbox mobile app — users must now utilize an internet browser to connect on Android and iOS devices — yet we hope it remains as efficient as it has been before.
“By integrating Xbox remote play and Xbox Cloud Gaming on Xbox.com, we’re able to support a broader range of devices, facilitate access to the store on the Xbox app on mobile, and simplify the process for our teams to enhance the streaming experience and develop new features going forward. As an added perk, beginning this month, games from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 will be streamable on remote play across all compatible devices.”
Moreover, Microsoft indicates that remote play will be gaining broader device compatibility soon, with “supported Samsung Smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest headsets” set to become remote play capable as Xbox broadens the feature’s scope.
