We are all familiar with and appreciate Paul Rudd, the well-meaning Ant-Man of the MCU as well as a charming star in numerous films. However, one of his earliest acting roles, which predates his television and movie endeavors, was a commercial for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System 34 years ago. Now, the cherished actor has teamed up with the Mario publisher once again in a fresh advertisement for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Paul Rudd’s original SNES commercial is definitely ’90s: high-pitched horror music leads in a boy sporting an excessively large black coat as he steps into a shadowy, mist-laden environment to engage with the console on what appears to be the largest outdoor screen available. Shadows of other figures ominously loom from behind as they observe him play F-Zero and Zelda, which is certainly not unsettling. ‘Now you’re playing with power,’ indeed.

The recently launched Switch 2 advertisement, over thirty years later, begins in a similar fashion. Paul Rudd wears the same outfit but appears as if he has not aged, and that same eerie music plays as he connects the console to its dock with fog billowing into, this time, his residence. The remainder of the ad is much more endearing and charmingly cheesy, as Rudd plays Mario Kart World alongside his on-screen family.

I also appreciate how unreserved Nintendo is in showcasing its exceptionally laggy screen-sharing Game Chat feature.

A few days ago, we discovered that the pricing for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will remain unaffected by government tariffs, with pre-orders scheduled to launch on April 24. However, certain accessories have experienced a price increase beyond what was initially estimated. In other news, PEGI may have reported a Switch 2 version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
