Do you recall the ’90s? Epic Games certainly does, and the firm has tapped into that vibrant decade with a fresh advertisement for the new Slurp Rush map in Fortnite Reload. Starred by Eric Andre and Kyle Mooney, the commercial pays tribute to those nostalgic advertisements from the ’90s that aimed to market sugary drinks and snacks to young audiences.
The now-defunct soda Surge, which was marketed in the late ’90s under the slogan “Feed the Rush,” serves as a specific target for parody in this commercial. Yet, this kind of advertisement was prevalent throughout the decade for various products aimed at children, such as those sugary drinks and sweets (like Gushers), as well as toys.
This advertisement aims to promote Fortnite’s Reload mode, a battle royale format that allows players to respawn instantly as long as a team member is still alive. The action occurs on relatively small islands inspired by previous chapters of the main Fortnite battle royale. This week, Reload introduced its third map, Slurp Rush, based on the Chapter 2 island. To mark this launch, Slurp Rush is currently the sole playable map in Reload, but after the exclusivity period concludes, it will rotate every thirty minutes with the other two maps.
Reload, which debuted last summer after a brief development phase, has prominently established itself as Fortnite’s second-most-popular mode, significantly exceeding player counts of the original mode which premiered in December.
April has been quite a bustling month for Fortnite with the Slurp Rush launch and the initiation of Sabrina Carpenter season in Fortnite Festival last week. However, anticipation is building for May, as the community looks forward to the much-anticipated Star Wars season, expected to be unveiled at Star Wars Celebration in Japan on Saturday.
