Captain Grant Sims is the commander of the Protocol militia force in Atomfall, and he can usually be found at the force’s headquarters in Wyndham Village. Although Captain Sims is an intimidating presence due to the significant turmoil he’s caused in the village and surrounding regions, you might also find yourself on his favorable side with a few good deeds. This endeavor may lead to discovering a new escape route out of the Quarantine Zone, but can Captain Sims and Protocol truly be trusted?
We will cover straightforward steps to complete your entire Captain Sims investigation and the outcome it offers you in Atomfall in the comprehensive walkthrough below.
Finding and conversing with Captain Sims
Initially, it’s essential to speak with Captain Sims to get started on his investigation. Once you enter Wyndham Village in Atomfall, the Protocol soldiers will direct you to meet with the captain at the Village Hill area. This location is situated centrally, just north of St. Katherine’s Church.
Inside the Village Hall, you will find Captain Sims positioned behind his desk at the end of the main room. Speak with the captain, and he will initially be cautious of you. However, to earn his trust, all you need to do is complete an investigation for him.
You can choose between two investigations, both of which take place in Wyndham Village. The first involves delving into a murder that occurred at St. Katherine’s Church. This initiates the Murder in the Church investigation, which we have previously detailed in a prior walkthrough. This investigation is relatively quick and features several different endings.
The alternative investigation you will undertake for Captain Sims is at the local bakery. The baker’s spouse has been acting strangely, and the captain wants you to find out what’s happening. This is another short investigation.
After you complete either of the investigations, return to Captain Sims and report your findings. This will increase the captain’s trust in you somewhat, but now he wants you to delve into a more significant issue.
Locate and confront Dr. Garrow
Captain Sims now requests that you investigate a notorious outlaw, Dr. Garrow. Dr. Garrow is a scientist responsible for the establishment of the Quarantine Zone, and she’s held captive in the Skethermoor Reformatory. The doctor intriguingly attempted to escape using a peculiar device, and Captain Sims wants you to uncover more about it.
We have discussed ways to find Dr. Garrow in Skethermoor Reformatory in a previous walkthrough. However, that guide may not fully apply if you choose to approach Captain Sims before attempting to find Dr. Garrow in the prison. Captain Sims will grant you permission to enter the prison, and during this time, you will not need to fight through the numerous Protocol soldiers surrounding the prison. You can easily get through the prison without using a Signal Redirector, and locate Dr. Garrow.
If you try to rescue Dr. Garrow before speaking to Captain Sims, it is highly recommended to refer to our walkthrough, as it will help you navigate with significantly fewer resources.
Regardless of how you approach it, Dr. Garrow is located on the lower floor of Skethermoor Reformatory. Proceed straight into the prison, and you will continue to descend various levels. Eventually, you will come across Dr. Garrow in a holding cell in the center of a large warehouse.
Engage with Dr. Garrow to hear her story. You may choose to break her out of prison if you believe her account, but you will primarily need to loot the Signal Redirector from a nearby room by Dr. Garrow’s cell. Once you obtain the Signal Redirector, you will have to decide whether to leave Dr. Garrow or rescue her, which will lead to an unusual ending in Atomfall. With the Signal Redirector in hand, return to Captain Sims.
Retrieve the Radio Component in Casterfell Woods
Upon returning to Captain Sims, you will present him with the Signal Redirector you collected. The captain will then share his escape plan with you; however, he still requires one essential component before the escape can take place. The residents of Wyndham Village allegedly stole a crucial radio component from Protocol and traded it for supplies from the Druids in Casterfell Woods. Your mission is to track down and recover the radio component.
If you have already completed some quests for Mother Jago in Atomfall, it’s very likely that you already possess this radio component. In which case, hand it over to the captain and you can continue with the investigation.
However, if you need to locate the radio component, you can do so by heading to Casterfell Woods through the Sewer Tunnels in Wyndham Village or retracing your steps to Slatten Dale and entering the woods from there. Either way, you need to locate the Talking Cave in Casterfell Woods, which is marked on your map if you are tracking the Captain Sims investigation. You can also find it at coordinates 23.0 E, 85.4 N.
The Talking Cave is right in the center of a Druid camp, so you will need to tread carefully and keep your distance as much as possible. You will also have to contend with a variety of Druids throughout the cave. However, if you have completed the Mother Jago quests, you may be able to sneak through without harm.
The radio component you are seeking is located at the far end of the winding paths you will find near the entrance. Continue straight until you reach a large wooden structure of a deity surrounded by blue plants. Go behind this wooden figure and enter a small, blue-lit cave. Here, you will find the radio component for Captain Sims on the ground near some potatoes. You may also find an audio log of Captain Sims discussing the “Atomfa”
