Its production cost was $150m (£115.7m).

Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Movie was likewise a tremendous hit, surpassing Frozen 2 to set the record for the biggest opening weekend of any animated film. It raked in $377m (£291m) in ticket sales worldwide during its debut week, overtaking the previous record held by Frozen 2 at $358m (£276m), and ultimately grossed $1.36bn.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ranks as the second highest-grossing video game adaptation film ever, bringing in $491m (£379m).

“I came away thinking that The Minecraft Movie, something more bizarre and adventurous and perhaps less formally polished, is out there somewhere, with its bright potential yet to be realized,” wrote Chris Donlan in his review of the Minecraft movie, giving it 3/5 stars.

“Minecraft hardly requires a film in the first place – it’s already a sensation, a Pandora’s Box, a crucial formative element of the childhood experiences of millions around the globe. Still, perhaps the film this game truly needs is, like much else in Minecraft, still waiting to be created.”

Lead star Jack Black believes A Minecraft Movie is exactly what the world needs right now.
