“Game development legend” Overwatch art director Bill Petras has unexpectedly died
“Gaming industry icon” and Overwatch art leader, Bill Petras, has unexpectedly passed away.
“I’m writing to share some sorrowful news,” stated Harley D. Huggins II, former cinematic project manager at Blizzard, on LinkedIn. “Bill Petras, a monumental figure in game development, has unexpectedly left us. Billy was an incredibly gifted artist who contributed to Blizzard Entertainment for nearly two decades.
“He took immense pride in his contributions, especially as the art director for World of Warcraft and Overwatch.”
“Billy and I began our journey at Blizzard the same week and remained close friends for 28 years. I will cherish our long, meandering discussions about life, game development, video games, art, comic books, toys, monster movies, and Conan. He will be profoundly missed by me and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
“I love you, brother. Rest in peace.”
Petras was employed at Blizzard from May 1997 to February 2005 as lead artist and art director, and later served as senior art director from January 2010 until October 2021.
