As relaxing as FromSoftware titles can be, I don’t know anyone who didn’t feel like tearing their hair out while trying to navigate the infamous Blighttown in the original Dark Souls. The game’s roll-dodging platforming mechanics were often quite frustrating, although they are now embraced in a meme-like fashion today. Nevertheless, the studio is developing more dynamic movement options in its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 title, a PvPvE-centric game titled The Duskbloods.

Notable FromSoft director Hidetaka Miyazaki discussed the game in a new Creator’s Voice blog, clarifying that the pseudo-vampiric faction we play as, known as the Bloodsworn, “possess superhuman abilities due to special blood,” indicating that we will no longer have to deal with cumbersome platforming challenges. “Even basic character actions in this title, such as sprinting, super jumps, and double jumps, are crafted to be fluid and enjoyable, complemented by each character’s distinct weapons and skills, fostering a wide scope for creativity,” Miyazaki explained. In terms of customizable protagonists, The Duskbloods includes about a dozen pre-made characters to choose from, which can be customized to a certain extent.

As with all the studio’s titles, there is an in-game rationale for why the team possesses such agility this time around. “The Bloodsworn are a faction whose members have gained superhuman capabilities through the essence of special blood,” Miyazaki continued. “In general terms, they are reminiscent of vampires but are not depicted as the terrifying creatures you might typically associate with classic vampirism… Additionally, while not directly linked to the Bloodsworn themselves, the setting supports the inclusion of firearms, and each character is equipped with a means to attack from a distance. I believe this is one of the unique aspects of the game compared to our prior titles. I hope players will appreciate these new action elements.”
