Nightdive Studios, a company recognized for its work in revitalizing and preserving classic video games, has announced its intention to begin remastering titles from the PS3 and Xbox 360 era.
In a discussion with VGC, studio head Stephen Kick and business director Larry Kuperman expressed their interest in exploring games that were exclusively launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 for possible remasters. Kuperman mentioned that various factors come into consideration when selecting which games might be remastered.
These factors include having reliable access to the game’s source code and original assets, as well as assessing what platforms the game is currently available on. Titles that are exclusive to a single console, for instance, may have a lower chance of receiving a remaster. This is what makes the prospect of addressing titles from the PS3 and Xbox 360 era so exciting.
Kick brought up Free Radical Design and Ubisoft’s 2008 PS3 exclusive, Haze. He emphasized that Nightdive would reach out to the developers regarding remastering their games and inquire what they would change if given the opportunity and a larger budget.
Furthermore, adapting older games to newer hardware resolves issues such as choppy frame rates and lengthy loading times that were present on their original platforms. In addition to providing players with easier access to vintage titles, migrating these older games to modern systems also addresses the same problems of choppy frame rates and long load times. Nonetheless, there has been some reluctance regarding the remastering of PS3 titles, as they can be quite complex due to their unique machine architecture. Nevertheless, Nightdive insists that they are prepared to tackle this challenge.
