WoW? RuneScape? Direct us!
Recently, I was discussing how World of Warcraft operates surprisingly well on Xbox thanks to NVIDIA GeForce Now, and while I appreciate the advantages of that method of gaming, it would undeniably be more advantageous to have a native version.
I am envisioning a dedicated application, installed directly on my Xbox, that would allow me to access World of Warcraft without needing to jump through hoops. They don’t even have to go all-in with controller support if they choose not to (although I know it does have some level of it already) – just let me navigate and play using a mouse and keyboard on Xbox!
I believe World of Warcraft will eventually receive the console treatment (they do want more revenue, right?), but I’m not as certain about games like RuneScape and one of my all-time favorite MMORPGs, Star Wars: The Old Republic. There’s evidently more effort required to create native apps for these titles, and even though I would be perfectly content playing them with a mouse and keyboard as well, I suspect there are stipulations that necessitate controller support on Xbox.
Perhaps all this discussion about the next Xbox console being more Windows-oriented gives us some optimism. I’m sure Phil Spencer wouldn’t want Xbox enthusiasts to be forced to play these games through the Microsoft Edge browser using a streaming service that is not owned by Microsoft! And of course, the appeal of enjoying these games natively on a new Xbox console would certainly help in selling more units in the next generation.
Who knows what the future holds, but for now, I’m just eager to hear which MMORPGs you would like to play natively on your Xbox console. Feel free to share your thoughts on whether you think they will actually come to life in Xbox’s future!
