Nintendo launches contemporary mobile app to talk straight with gamers

Nintendo has introduced a new mobile application titled Nintendo Today to connect directly with gamers.

The application was revealed by Shigeru Miyamoto during a major Nintendo direct and is described as a “new platform designed to provide updates to [players] directly.”

Miyamoto noted that the application will function like a “daily planner” that allows users to prepare for events such as Nintendo direct presentations and game launches.

Additionally, it will host a variety of content such as articles, comics, wallpapers, and homescreen widgets featuring Nintendo characters and franchises.

Following the Nintendo Switch 2 showcase on April 2, 2025, updates about the forthcoming console will be delivered to users “daily and straight” via Nintendo Today.

Nintendo Today will be available for download on compatible iOS and Android devices later today.

This is an exciting move from Nintendo that could help the company establish and maintain open communication with customers.

Nintendo Today will be accessible to anyone with a Nintendo Account.

Nintendo continues to explore ways to engage gamers and fans beyond the traditional console environment. Last year, the company launched the Nintendo Music streaming app to enable gamers to listen to songs from popular franchises like Animal Crossing and Super Mario—although without proper credits.

It also unveiled an alarm clock named ‘Alarmo’ in October 2024 for those who struggle with snoozing to “wake up to a world of games.”

Along with showcasing new images from Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and Rhythm Heaven Groove, Nintendo also revealed the digital game card feature.

The new feature can be used to manage and share purchased digital titles similarly to how physical releases are handled. For instance, gamers utilizing the feature will be able to lend digital titles to another user or system associated with a Nintendo account.

“Similar to transferring physical game cards between devices, virtual game cards allow you to ‘eject’ a bought digital title from one Nintendo Switch system and ‘load’ it onto another—whether it belongs to a member of the same Nintendo Account family group or a second device linked to your account,” reads an explanation.

“This optional feature lets you view virtual game cards or eject them from your system. The digital game can also be lent to a device of a Nintendo Account family group member through a local wireless connection.”

Games lent to another family group member will automatically return after two weeks. Digital Game Cards will be available on Nintendo Switch in April, but will also launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 upon release.
