A modification that places a playable representation of GTA 6‘s map into GTA 5 has come under scrutiny after the proprietors of Rockstar, Take-Two Interactive, issued a copyright removal request to its creator’s YouTube channel.

The mod, created by YouTuber Darkish House, was an attempt to bring GTA 6’s environment to life in GTA 5 by building upon the work of the Mapping Vice City project – a community-driven effort to piece together GTA 6’s map by examining all currently published official media and combining findings with prior leaked map coordinates.

Darkish House began sharing updates on social media in January, and a version 1.0 of his mod – created using sources from GTA 5 – launched last week. However, the project may now be halted; Darkish House is scaling back after Take-Two’s legal team issued a copyright removal request against his YouTube channel.

“I dedicated months to creating a fan-made map inspired by GTA 6 within GTA 5 – something purely out of enthusiasm, not for profit,” Darkish House stated in an introduction to a new video detailing the week’s events. “However, shortly after posting a video showcasing the project, Take-Two Interactive took it down. No warning. No communication. Just vanished.”

“I’ve also taken down the download link despite the fact that they didn’t request it,” Darkish House mentioned in the video. “But I believe it’s wiser to be proactive rather than waiting for their email that may never arrive… So why did they remove my video?… Well, my suspicion is that the map may be a tad too precise.”

In a follow-up interview with IGN, Darkish House acknowledged he had anticipated Take-Two’s reaction based entirely on past mod removals. “I approached this project knowing it was a possibility,” he explained, “and the fact that it occurred does not surprise me.”

“I believe my map could have spoiled the surprise of their map, which I understand,” he continued. “If you had spent years crafting this incredible game world just to have a YouTuber ruin the experience of the map’s design, dimensions, and atmosphere… I’d want that removed too.”

Take-Two has long been at odds with the GTA modding community, most recently shutting down the Liberty City Preservation Project – a bold mod that included a playable version of GTA 4’s map in GTA 5. In 2023, however, they hired Cfx.re – the team behind the popular GTA 5 FiveM and RDR2 RedM mods (another group that has previously faced Rockstar’s ire) – which is now collaborating on an official “conversion tool” to integrate GTA 5 mods into the recently released Enhanced PC version of GTA 5.

As for GTA 6, it is still aiming for the fall 2025 release window previously announced by Take-Two
