You may find it challenging to express yourself in front of others, but at least you wouldn’t have to do it with motion capture cameras attached to your head, like Murderer’s Creed Shadows actress Masumi, who admits she felt “quite anxious” during her initial experience with the technology.

“I felt quite anxious because… well, for starters, it was my first time,” the Naoe actress shares with her Shadows co-star Tongayi Chirisa, who portrays the samurai Yasuke, in a recent Ubisoft interview. Shadows – although we mention in our Murderer’s Creed: Shadows review that the game’s narrative is primarily “uninspiring” – was set to explore its deep emotional lows to propel Masumi into a challenging role.

Notably, the actress recounts a “very emotional” scene in Shadows that “initiates Naoe’s quest for revenge, primarily,” and that was the very first motion capture scene she was scheduled to shoot.

“The entire week you were in tears,” Chirisa recalls, chuckling.

“I really wanted to ensure that I would deliver a genuine performance,” Masumi responds, “that I wouldn’t be distracted by these cameras I was wearing, the helmets, and the full suit, along with the absence of any interaction [during filming]” – just a dummy to interact with, Chirisa adds.

Despite her apprehensions, it appears that Masumi’s inaugural scene was a resounding success. Although she admits she can’t quite recall the details due to “the moment, the emotion engulfed me,” she knows that “when I finished, I received a standing ovation.”

The completed scene in Murderer’s Creed Shadows is powerful, and Masumi conveys Naoe’s sorrow and intensity with great subtlety – no small feat while wearing a camera on her head.

The crucial scene is just one of the ways that Masumi was able to challenge expectations.
