Empowering Choices: Redefining Female Characters in Mute Hill’s Franchise

Women characters in Mute Hill face grim fates, suffering physical harm and enduring torment at the hands of their fathers. It is no longer my vision of a perfect spring break, but too often, it is an inescapable reality. Therefore, Mute Hill f, the latest entry in Konami‘s survival horror saga, might not make life any easier for its female lead, but creator Ryukishi07 at least promises to empower her.

“I have played every Silent Hill game up to now,” states Ryukishi07, the legendary creator behind the When They Cry visual novels, in Konami’s newest Mute Hill release. “One observation I made is that a number of the female characters undergo considerable suffering throughout their lives, which is why I thought, if this game is going to feature a female protagonist, then I want her to have the ability to make her own choices—regardless of the challenges she faces.”

Ryukishi07 elaborates: “I don’t want her to be merely dragged through the narrative, but rather to discover her own solutions. That was the type of protagonist – or at least, the type of story – that I aspired to create.”

As a devoted Mute Hill enthusiast, I feel relieved to hear this. Part of me has often found solace in the dark deities and calamities that plagued the franchise’s female characters amidst the rusting horror.

Like these women, kind-hearted and family-oriented until they wield knives, I recognize that I too have experienced fear beyond my control, beyond my desires. I’ve felt a connection with Angela in Mute Hill 2, with Maria, and with Heather Mason in Mute Hill 3—through their struggles, I felt less alone.

Yet, I have also wished that blood-soaked sorrow was not depicted as inherent to femininity, even as many horror narratives—not solely Mute Hill—tend to reinforce this notion.

Nonetheless, Mute Hill f has the potential to break this cycle of expectation. I am eager to see how Mute Hill f’s teenage protagonist, Hinako Shimizu, endeavors to escape the city that clings to her like mold. Armed with a metal pipe, the possibilities are limitless.
