Final Fantasy 14‘s upcoming update, 7.2, is scheduled for release on Tuesday, March 25th.

As always, the new update – titled Seekers of Eternity – will enrich the narrative with fresh quests and dungeons, a new raid in The Arcadion, a new trial, and more. You can catch a glimpse of what’s to come in the teaser below – who is the boy with the azure hair?

However, the anticipated Cosmic Exploration and Occult Crescent field operations modes will be introduced in later patches: the former in patch 7.21 on April 22nd, and the latter in patch 7.25 on May 27th.

As noted in a previous Letter From The Producer, the 7.X series will continue to reference Final Fantasy 9. Nevertheless, it is the Occult Crescent field operation that may be most intriguing.

On a distinct island, players can explore the area together to battle creatures and bosses, with a somewhat varied leveling system centered around data gathering. The disparity between your level and that of foes will influence damage dealt and received, and if defeated, players will lose experience points if not revived, which could ultimately result in a decrease in data level.

Players will also recognize a secondary support role to enhance their abilities, with classes similar to those in Final Fantasy 5. This field operation seems to offer a fresh take on the MMO’s cooperative gameplay.

Cosmic Exploration, meanwhile, introduces a new task for crafters and gatherers, with new moons appearing with each patch to explore. Players will visit moons, collect resources, and establish bases in a collective experience – its narrative revolves around assembling a spaceship for interstellar travel.

Before the livestream, Yoshida was interviewed by the Japanese publication Famitsu, where he stated that this patch would be the most significant to date. This will surely please fans who have felt fatigued by the game since the release of Dawntrail.

Other minor adjustments Yoshida mentioned include the ability to use a mount while on the move and a new speed mechanic that activates once your run depletes in towns and gathering areas, both of which will assist with the pace of exploration.

Furthermore, Yoshida told Game Look he was initially uncertain about incorporating so many Final Fantasy 9 references in Dawntrail and the subsequent updates (thanks to Automaton).

“Regarding FF9 elements, I was quite conflicted… At first, I believed it might be wise to distance ourselves a bit from nods to FF9 and was inclined to follow that approach,” he remarked.

“FF9 is a classic, and everyone has a deep emotional connection to it, so I aimed to avoid inadvertently steering the narrative too heavily in that direction. However, I now believe that the current trajectory of the story is suitable in light of future developments.”
