Kratos from God of War has led quite a hectic life: he’s fathered a teenager, defeated deities, and cultivated a luscious beard that would make any lumberjack envious – and he’s only twenty years old! To celebrate the momentous occasion of Kratos and the God of War series’ grand two-oh, Sony is launching a complimentary update for 2022’s Ragnarök which will feature some retro-inspired skins.

Beginning next Wednesday, March 20th, God of War Ragnarök players on PC and PlayStation can obtain a complimentary update which adds, among other items, the Dark Odyssey armor and appearance for Kratos – both of which are inspired by the classic dark-and-gold skin players could gain after completing 2007’s God of War 2 on God Mode difficulty. This includes the swirling shoulder sheen and striking white eyes of the anniversary skin itself, as well as the Dark Odyssey Breastplate, Dark Odyssey Bracers, and Dark Odyssey Belt – all of which can be accessed from any Lost Items chest in the main game or automatically while in Valhalla.

Players can also explore Dark Odyssey appearances for the Guardian Shield, Dauntless Shield, Stone Wall Shield, Break Start Shield, Onslaught Shield, Spartan Aspis Shield, and Rönd. In the weapons department, Dark Odyssey appearances will be available for the fully upgraded versions of the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and Draupnir Spear. Each comes equipped with its own Dark Odyssey attachments, so if you enjoy giving Kratos a Dark Odyssey Knob, now is your chance. Sony indicates that all this content will be included in the ‘Edit Appearance’ feature in next week’s update.

Moreover, the dark and gold aesthetic extends to two pieces of Dark Odyssey armor for Freya and Atreus. Freya will receive the Dark Odyssey Witch Frock, adorned with elegant golden tassels, while Atreus will sport the primarily leather-based Dark Odyssey Vestment.

That sums up everything in God of War Ragnarök’s free update, but the 20th-anniversary festivities will continue in various forms – particularly in the real-world realm. As detailed in Sony’s announcement, a two-volume retrospective book on God of War is on the way, along with art prints, t-shirts, and an exhibition at C
