“I uphold my decision,” actor states

Two voice performers from Zenless Zone Zero claim they were replaced for participating in the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

As reported by Eurogamer, Emeri Fling and Nicholas Thurkettle – portraying Soldier 11 and Lycaon, respectively – stated they found out their characters had been recast by examining the patch notes simultaneously with the players.

Although the strike was announced on July 25, 2024, and began prior, Zenless Zone Zero is not subject to the strike, however, voice actors both within and outside of the union may choose to support the movement.

In a Bluesky thread, Fling expressed: “I was replaced as Soldier 11 because I refuse to perform work not covered by a SAG Interim Agreement during a strike for AI rights; the outcome may shape the future of our industry.

“I want to clarify that there is a difference between being ‘struck’ and not being under an Interim Agreement. Union projects that began before the strike and non-union projects are not ‘struck.’ However, those projects do not provide the Union-enforced AI protections we are advocating for.

“Numerous actors are electing to intentionally refrain from work on these types of projects since we believe it’s the most effective way to support the Union’s battle for essential protections that are vital to our continued ability to create the art we cherish. I understood that by withholding my work it was likely I could be replaced, although naturally, I hoped they would keep my character silent until I could return. I learned today that the role was recast just like all of you.”

Fling concluded by stating they had enjoyed working on the game but [maintained] their [decisions] “regardless of the consequences.”

Thurkettle similarly addressed the issue on Bluesky, stating: “This is what I’ve remained quiet about. I’m not SAG, but what gaming companies are aiming to do with AI is an existential threat. I made a personal stand to demand protections and had to be prepared to give up the best opportunity of my professional career. I uphold my decision.”
