Last month, we learned that GTA 6 publisher Take-Two believes that Rockstar’s forthcoming title could potentially assist in selling Xbox consoles this year – and now a new Windows Central article featuring analyst Rhys Elliot discusses how Microsoft might need to consider seizing this opportunity with Xbox Series S.

The MIDiA Research report noted Microsoft’s declining console sales recently, and how, despite Sony effectively ‘winning’ the generation with PS5, Xbox could leverage GTA 6 as “a final celebration for its Series X|S generation, due to the affordability of the Series S.”

“Similar to Rockstar’s other major franchises, GTA 6 will launch on PlayStation and Xbox before it becomes available on PC. Therefore, it would be beneficial for Xbox to make a strong push for the Series S and hold a promotional sale to coincide with GTA 6 — as one last celebration for this generation. The marketing team should be sounding the alarm, emphasizing that ‘the Series S is the easiest way to enjoy GTA 6.’

The analyst further asserted that if this promotional sale resulted in a “sub-$200 Series S,” that combo “could serve as an appealing entry point to GTA for budget-conscious consumers, of whom there are many, owing to today’s challenging economy and cost-of-living crisis.”

However, historically, Sony has often secured the advertising rights for Grand Theft Auto – a point this article also addresses. Elliot notes that despite his strong recommendations for Microsoft to promote the Xbox Series S for this game specifically, he “believes PlayStation will ultimately acquire the rights.”

It’s certainly worth mentioning that GTA 6 does not need extensive marketing efforts to embed itself in the hearts and minds of potential customers. This is a mega-franchise — one of the most recognizable gaming IPs globally — and with the right messaging, Xbox Series S could be seen as a reliable option for playing GTA 6 regardless of who obtains the official advertising rights. Microsoft just needs to truly attempt to achieve that.
