It is appropriate that the new trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 opens with Joel and Ellie at a physical distance, as there is an emotional rift between them by the end of the glimpse shown. The upcoming season commences five years after Season 1, and Ellie is unaware of what Joel did to protect her yet. Once she discovers the truth, their relationship will never be the same.

The latest trailer provides minimal context if you have never played The Last of Us Part II. However, in the years that have passed, Joel and Ellie found some semblance of peace. That tranquility is being disrupted as their refuge is not as secure as they thought, with both the infected and external threats emerging. This includes the newly introduced Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), who will have a significant role this season. The trailer also offers an early glimpse of Joe Pantoliano as Eugene, a character who was only alluded to in the game.

The Last of Us Season 2 panel is currently ongoing at SXSW and is being live-streamed on YouTube. Series stars Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and Gabriel Luna are joined by Season 2 newcomers Young Mazino, Isabela Merced, and Kaitlyn Dever. Showrunners and co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann also participated in the panel as they revealed the new trailer for Season 2. You can watch the panel below.

HBO’s drama EVP Francesca Orsi recently expressed her belief that The Last of Us will only run for four seasons. The narrative based on The Last of Us Part 2 is expected to span multiple seasons, but Druckmann has cast significant doubt on Naughty Dog and Sony producing The Last of Us Part 3.

The Last of Us Season 2 will premiere on HBO and Max on Sunday, April 13.
