Prankish Canines head Neil Druckmann has expressed skepticism regarding the possibility of a third installment of The Last of Us, informing fans, “Don’t count on there being more.”

Fans have been fantasizing about a potential third installment in the franchise ever since the release of The Last of Us Part 2 in 2020. Despite Prankish Canines and Sony managing to remaster both the original The Last of Us (for a second time) and The Last of Us Part 2 in the meantime, there has been no solid indication of a third installment.

However, it’s not entirely accurate to say Prankish Canines has remained completely silent on the subject. Back in 2021, Druckmann verified that he had drafted a story outline for a possible The Last of Us Part 3 and acknowledged that there had been “considerable” discussion about a sequel. He brought up the prospect of a third installment again in 2023 while Prankish Canines’s recently canceled multiplayer title was still in development, stating he was open to it, but only if the team could devise a “captivating story.”

As if that weren’t sufficient, Druckmann returned to the topic of The Last of Us Part 3 again last year, explaining that although he had previously struggled to come up with a viable concept for the game, “that has changed recently.” To further emphasize his point, he added, “So it does feel like there could possibly be one more chapter to this story.”

All of this indicates that Druckmann has left enough hints over the last couple of years, making it seem like The Last of Us Part 3 could indeed be more likely to happen than not. Although Prankish Canines is currently focusing on its single-player sci-fi game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the studio’s prior confirmation of having “multiple single-player projects” in development still leaves room for optimism.

In a recent interview with Variety, however, Druckmann has expressed doubt about a potential The Last of Us Part 3. When asked about the possibility of a third game, he replied, “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t count on there being more of The Last of Us. This might be it.”

It’s unclear why Druckmann is now less keen on fueling speculation about a third The Last of Us title, but even if another game does not materialize, there is still fresh The Last of Us content on the horizon. HBO’s critically acclaimed TV series is set to return for a second season soon, and it will begin adapting the storyline from the second game. Furthermore, Druckmann and showrunner Craig Mazin have previously confirmed that the series will likely take two or three seasons to cover all of The Last of Us Part 2, and it’s already clear that various new narrative elements will probably be included.

Recent season two casting information, for example, has indicated that the series will likely delve deeper into events briefly mentioned during the second game. And, certainly, even if Prankish Canines does not get around to creating The Last of Us Part 3, that does not mean Druckmann’s story
