Alert: HUGE spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again episodes 1 & 2 and onwards!

Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane and producer Sana Amanat unveil the poignant demise of Foggy in the very first episode, which not only propels the final season but was originally intended to occur off-screen in the discarded episodes.

“It was quite bizarre,” Scardapane shares with GamesRadar+. “It was decided prior to my joining. However, in the initial version, it happened off-screen, and I thought, if something so intense, dreadful, and life-altering is going to unfold, we need to experience it and witness the consequences it’s going to have on Karen, Matt, and the entire world. As Sana has repeated countless times, there are only a handful of events that might lead him to reconsider laying down the mask or suppressing who he is. This was one of those moments. So, we didn’t make that decision lightly.”

In the debut episode, Bullseye seeks revenge against Matt and tragically murders his closest companion in what could be one of the most distressing sequences in live-action Marvel history.

The revival series was initially envisioned as an 18-episode procedural, where Matt Murdock would spend more time in the courtroom and less as Daredevil. It was reported that Foggy and Karen would not be included in the initial series, hence it is clear that his death transpired off-screen – a choice that feels particularly unjust to his character. Despite the harshness of that moment, experiencing his death in Karen’s embrace has far greater emotional impact than simply hearing about it through exposition.

“In a sense, we intensified it. We integrated it into this major action sequence,” Scardapane continues. “Your focus is captured, you feel the tension rise, and then when it happens, I believe you should leave thinking, ‘Oh my God, everything has just shifted. Everything is now different.’

It feels somewhat like a betrayal to the fans who have been vocal about wanting Karen and Foggy in the revival, but it seems this is not the last appearance of him.

“And keep in mind, he’s not gone for good,” Amanat reassures.

“He’s not. Trust me, he’s not gone for good. That’s all I can reveal – this isn’t the last you will see of him. We truly understand the heartbreak, and we didn’t approach this lightly. It upset me. We were all emotional that day, we were emotional while watching it. All these statements are accurate,” Scardapane adds. “But the concept we discussed earlier, the idea that I’ve been contemplating – this is a kind of new origin story for Matt. He’s one of those characters who, like in all classic Marvel tales, is significantly impacted by some form of tragedy.”

Much of the backlash from fans regarding the announcement of the initial revival was due to Foggy and Karen’s absence – which brings to mind what Charlie Cox mentioned about Marvel contemplating reimagining and creating a new Matt Murdock. But who is Matt Murdock without his two closest friends – the only individuals who understand how to ground him? It seems that is precisely the question this season aims to answer.

“He was impacted by his father’s death before. And of course, the radioactive truck that granted him his powers and left him blind, but this was also the most significant event that could have…
