Twisted Metal’s Battle Royale: A Surprising Twist in Gaming Warfare

PlayStation’s recently cancelled Twisted Metal title was reportedly envisioned as a battle royale.

According to MP1st, the scrapped project—internally referred to as Mission Copper—purportedly merged third-person shooting elements with the vehicular combat the series is renowned for.

How do we know this? A UI programmer who was with Firesprite from April 2022 to October 2023 has posted obscured images from their development work on their portfolio. While the game isn’t explicitly mentioned and the images are blurred, you may still glimpse early prototypes of the third-person action both inside and outside vehicles.

“I participated in Project Copper leading the UI team,” the developer noted on their online portfolio. “My role involved creating a universal UI system intended for use across various projects within the company, while also supervising a team of two UI Programmers and collaborating with other departments.”

Regarding the game itself? The developer describes Mission Copper as a “third-person vehicular action combat title based on a classic PlayStation IP developed by Firesprite (PlayStation Studios).”

“It featured third-person shooter mechanics intertwined with vehicle combat, with the aim of being the last player remaining,” they added.

Back in February 2022, Sony announced its plans to launch over 10 new live service games in the coming years. A month later, then-Sony executive Jim Ryan expressed that he believed live service games were a crucial part of gaming’s future, reiterating the company’s commitment to live service gaming.

However, since then, the company has scaled back on this vision, canceling several proposed projects, including two more in January.

In related news, just last week, Peacock released its initial trailer for the second season of Twisted Metal. The upcoming season features stars such as Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Seanoa, Will Arnett, and Anthony Carrigan.
