EA has unveiled the source code for a number of Command & Conquer games on Github. In addition to the classic 1995 title, the repositories also include the main Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Generals’ Zero Hour expansion, Command & Conquer: Renegade, and a remastered collection of the first two games. Mod support for these titles—along with Command & Conquer: Kane’s Wrath and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3—has also been included.

According to RockPaperShotgun, the publisher hired a modder named Luke “CCHyper” Feenan to restore the source code for these older games. Feenan previously assisted in updating the remasters that were released on Steam in 2024.

While EA has not provided a specific webpage for the source code releases, it has previously made some of its technology and accessibility-related patents open source. After committing to making these patents available for broader commercial use, it recently permitted third-party teams to utilize its technology concerning speech recognition and photosensitivity detection.

This marks actually the second occasion that EA has released source code for the real-time strategy franchise: alongside the remasters in 2020, it made the code for the mod libraries of the first two games open source, allowing players to create improved mods to their heart’s content.

A history of Command & Conquer

Created by the now-defunct Westwood Studios, Command & Conquer is recognized as one of the pioneering titles in the real-time strategy genre, inspired by the developer’s earlier game, Dune II. The franchise was notable for its inclusion of full-motion video cutscenes and multiple sub-series throughout its run.

Before the remasters in 2020, the last main entry was 2010’s Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight. The series primarily continues its legacy through the remastered versions and the free-to-play Command & Conquer: Rivals mobile game.

Throughout its history, Westwood and subsequent studios attempted to expand the franchise with various spin-offs that were eventually canceled. Two of the more well-known were the first-person shooter Tiberium and Command & Conquer: Generals 2. The latter received such a negative response during its closed alpha testing that both it and developer Victory Games were shut down.
