Retro-Bit Acknowledges Misstep Over Uncredited Fan Translations in Their Games
The company attributes fault to the contractor for presenting “to a lesser or greater extent, uncredited work.”
Retro-Bit has expressed regret for launching a collection of 16-bit games featuring uncredited fan translations.
Following backlash from fans regarding the use of uncredited translations in at least four re-releases for SNES and Mega Drive / Genesis that were previously exclusive to Japan, Retro-Bit acknowledged it had “lowered its defenses.” They described the event as an “irresponsible lapse on our part,” vowing to “contact those whose contributions were unrecognized to provide a resolution.”
The company explained that it had previously collaborated with a variety of translators and programmers for earlier releases, but their usual contractors were unavailable due to scheduling issues.
It subsequently blamed its most recent translator for submitting “to a lesser or greater extent, uncredited work.”
“We’ve always maintained a fruitful understanding of our shared responsibilities with our partners, and regrettably, in this situation, we let our defenses down,” Retro-Bit told VGC in a statement.
“This was an irresponsible oversight on our part, and we accept full responsibility for this disappointing outcome and for not verifying the submitted translation. To rectify this issue, we will reach out to those whose work was not credited to establish a means of resolution.”
