The online gaming sector has already seen several job cuts this year, and now Warner Bros. has announced the closure of three studios.

This includes Player First – the team behind the wildly popular fighting game MultiVersus, which also ended its service earlier this month and is set to go offline in May 2025. Additionally, WB San Diego is shutting down. This team was supposedly working on an exciting new ‘AAA’ free-to-play project.

Lastly, there’s the shutdown of Monolith Productions (Middle-earth) along with the cancellation of its new Wonder Woman game, which has reportedly been in development for several years. Warner Bros. provided the following statement to Kotaku, explaining how these layoffs relate to a “strategic shift”:

“We have had to make some very difficult decisions to realign our development studios and investments around creating the best games possible with our flagship franchises – Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. After thorough evaluation, we are closing three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of the capabilities of these teams or the talent they possess.”

MultiVersus was initially designed as a free-to-play title and is shutting down just a year after its revival on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
