UPDATE: Warner Bros. has described the closures as a “strategic shift in direction.”

Update, February 25, 2025: In a press release, Warner Bros. Games stated that the decision to close three studios was “extremely difficult” and “not a reflection of these teams or the abilities that reside within them,” but simply the outcome of a “strategic shift in direction.”

Currently, it is uncertain how many developers will be affected by these closures, but Monolith’s LinkedIn profile indicates it employs 201-500 individuals, WB Games San Diego has 51-200 staff members, and Player First consists of 11-50 employees.

“We have had to make some very tough choices to restructure our development studios and investments around delivering the best games possible with our key franchises – Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones,” Warner Bros. conveyed to Kotaku in a statement.

“After thorough contemplation, we are shutting down three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This represents a strategic change in direction and is not a reflection of these groups or the skills that exist within them.

“The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game will no longer proceed. Our aspiration was to provide players and fans with the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and regrettably, this no longer aligns with our strategic priorities. This is yet another challenging decision, as we value Monolith’s rich history of delivering compelling fan experiences through outstanding games.

“We genuinely appreciate the dedication of the three teams and thank each employee for their contributions,” the statement concludes. “As tough as today is, we remain focused on and enthusiastic about returning to producing top-quality games for our devoted fans, developed by our world-class studios, and restoring our Games business to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.”
